Toxins In Your Deodorant

We love to smell good. That’s great. But, this means applying a lot of deodorant on the armpit daily. This seemingly safe daily hygiene can have serious consequences for your health, if you choose the wrong products.

Conventionally sold deodorant often contains a variety of harmful chemicals, such as; aluminum , parabens, propylene glycol, triclosan and steareths. It is important to note that while chemicals sometimes eliminate inconveniences from our lives, they also pose harmful health effects.

Reducing your exposure to toxins by avoiding certain foods is a great way to maintain good health. However, we often forget that most chemicals we put into our bodies are harmful and can be absorbed through the skin, and even in very small amounts can have adverse effects on your health.

These are the 7 harmful ingredients in your deodorant that you should avoid.

Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl)

Parabens are very common ingredient found in everyday cosmetic products and your deodorant as well. They disturb the body’s hormonal balance and mimic estrogen.Research shows that parabens may cause “early puberty in children, hormone-related cancers in women and organ toxicity.
They are also known to build up in breast tissue, resulting in tumor growth.

Aluminium Compounds

( aluminium chloralhydrate, aluminium zirconium)

Aluminum compounds in deodorants temporarily stop sweat from flowing. They act as a plug within the sweat ducts. These compounds can be absorbed by your skin and can interfere with the body’s natural sex hormones. This may cause breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men, as well as increase the risk for Alzheimer’s disease in both sexes.

Sweating is actually a good thing.Though not always socially acceptable, has its benefits.Vani Hari explains that sweating results in a clearer complexion, helps lower body temprature and wards off sicknesses. So, while nobody wants sweaty pits, no one wants cancer or Alzheimer’s disease, either.

Silica is a known skin irritant, it may also be contaminated with crystalline quartz which is capable of causing cancer. Silica is linked to cancer, allergies/immunotoxicity

Triclosan acts as a preservative and anti-bacterial agent. It is a known endocrine disruptor and a potential carcinogen, because when it reacts with tap water it creates chloroform gas, which is suspected of causing cancer . It has also been linked to uncontrolled cell growth, immune system damage, asthma and allergies.    It irritates the skin and causes dermatitis. Triclosan kills both the good and bad bacteria contained in the body. The FDA classifies triclosan as a pesticide, while the IARC has it listed as a possible carcinogen.

IARC, claims that if Talc contains asbestiform fibers, then it is considered a carcinogen. The quantity of asbestiform fibers in deodorants is unclear as it is not regulated in cosmetic products.Talc is linked to cancer.

Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is another common ingredient with health hazards. When paired with other chemicals, this substance can be downright dangerous, as it’s linked to central nervous system. It is considered a neurotoxin and may cause delayed allergic reactions. It may cause kidney and liver damage and testicular cancer in men. What’s even more alarming is that deodorants sometimes contain 50 percent propylene glycol.

The “n” stands for a number. So the label may say, for example, steareth-1. It is actually derived from vegetables, but is reacted with ethylene oxide which is a known carcinogen.Steareth-N is linked to cancer.

Avoiding chemicals used in foods is only half the battle when it comes to living an all-natural lifestyle. Other products to look out for include cosmetics, cleaning supplies and other household products such as cookware, candles and insect repellents .
